Specialist in Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) for mass fatality incidents. Derek is a former senior police officer and Head of Forensic Services in one of the large UK police forces. He has directed and managed a number of large scale mass fatality disasters globally, including 16 months posting as the International Police Commander in Thailand following the 2004 Tsunami in South East Asia. During this event he was responsible for managing an international team drawn from 31 nations. In 2005, as a UK DVI Commander, he responded to the Egyptian hotel bombings in Sharm el Sheikh where 93 people lost their lives, and in 2009 he was the UK DVI Commander for the Air France crash near to Brazil in which 228 people were tragically killed. Derek has previously been a member of the UK's National DNA Strategy Board, the National DNA Operations Group, and the UK Representative on the Interpol DNA Monitoring Expert Group (MEG). He has also been a member of the National Forensics 21 Programme Board, UK DVI Commander for disaster management and a member of the Interpol DVI Steering Committee. Derek was the Chair of the Interpol DVI Tsunami Evaluation Group, and has sat on various other DVI and forensic working groups.
