 Jean-Robert Lafortune is a human rights and civil rights advocate pursuing equal treatment for Haitian nationals in the United States and other countries in the region. Known as a Haitian immigration experts supporting open border of the UNited States. 
Jean-Robert Lafortune has occupied leadership position within the Miami-Dade County Government and advocated for anti-povery program under the Community Action Agency umbrella for over one decade.

As the Director of the Citizen Participation Division, Lafortune, has intiated and inovated several programs serving the low income communities in Miami Dade during the past decade.

Regarding voting and empowerment, Lafortune as the CEO of the Haitian-American Grassroots Coalition (HAGC), intervenes during the last election to request to the Florida Governor Rick Scott to extend early voting up to last Sunday in order to allow disenfranchized voters in mMIami Dade an opportunity to vote for their candidate of choice. He cited that with an average wait in line of 7 hours per voter, Florodians were payng a high price at the polls this season.

In 2007, his organization HAGC had to sue the State of Florida Department of State for the no-match no vote issue where voters with compound first name and last name whose identity was not certified by the State had to vote with provisional ballots.
