“Using words and narrative to birth dreams and possibilities…”
Kate E. Stephenson is a communications specialist, a title that encompasses writing, editing, indie publishing consulting and career coaching. A lover of language, a creator of narratives, and a weaver of words, Kate likes wearing many hats. She grew up believing that anything is possible and that you can go anywhere in the world or your imagination through a book. She still feels highly inspired by the "Reading Rainbow" theme song. Sing it along with her: "Butterfly in the sky, I can go twice as high. Take a look, it's in a book. A reading rainbow."
She founded KEMPS Consulting in 2006, a boutique communications firm, catering to dreamers and doers with something to say. With a focus on personalized service, Kate offers tailored solutions and custom processes to meet her clients' specific needs.
When she first started KEMPS over a decade ago, a client asked her, “Well it’s nice that you want to offer different services, but what are you going to specialize in?” The answer to his question took some time to crystallize, but it’s simple. All of KEMPS’ services share the same core–COMMUNICATION.
Kate has worked with businesses, corporate publishers, indie presses, individual authors, undergraduate students to postgraduate scholars, and job seekers in all stages of their careers. All share the same need to create a consistent, compelling voice that connects with and motivates an audience to some action. KEMPS Consulting exists to help clients craft a clear, powerful, engaging message.
Kate was always focused on words, earning a Master of Arts in Publishing and Writing from Emerson College and a Bachelor of Arts in Literature and the Arts from Vassar College. She interned at the award-winning Hudson Valley Magazine in their Advertising and Marketing department, providing a solid foundation in the business side of publishing. She was then introduced to book sales at the award-winning independent bookstore, Bunch of Grapes, Vineyard Haven, MA. After graduating with honors, she started her editorial career at the then largest book publisher in the world, Pearson Education under the tutelage of former Vice President and Publisher of Business Trade, Timothy Moore. She has since worked with a diverse clientele to support clear, captivating communication.
As a book editor and reviewer, Kate seeks out titles that are a little left of center, quirky writing and courageous authors who speak their souls in unexpected and indelible ways that leave the reader changed. Striving to ensure the Truth is preserved, she often encourages abandoning facts and is a strong proponent of creative license.
Her family instilled the belief that if you love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life. Kate has built her philosophy as a career coach on this principle. A career is about more than just making money–it’s about fulfillment. Kate believes that life is a contact sport, and in every sport, there are coaches to help you call the right plays and help you win. Kate helps individuals carefully consider and answer the question, "If you could do anything, what would would it be?"
In all endeavors, she aspires to excellence, understanding that perfection is unattainable. She has learned that there is beauty in imperfection and purpose. To err is human, and she revels in the humanity that each project explores, highlights, educates and motivates. With every project she becomes better.
