If your idea of heaven is an off-grid homestead 170 miles northeast of Fairbanks surrounded by fifty or so sled dogs, you’d have to agree that Brent Sass is living the good life. As an 18 year old, he moved from Minnesota to Alaska to attend college on a cross-country skiing scholarship. When a dog team passed him on the ski trails one day, he was fascinated – and hooked. After building his very own log cabins in the woods, Brent founded Wild and Free Mushing and his life went to the dogs. Brent’s first competitive race was the 2006 Yukon Quest 300, which he won handily. He’s gone on to run and finish the Yukon Quest (a 1,000 mile race from Fairbanks to Whitehorse) eight times and the Iditarod three times, being named Rookie of the Year in 2012. Brent has over six years experience guiding tours in remote areas of Alaska. He calls the ghost town of Eureka, Alaska home now, living on the historic Salter Homestead. As a musher, Brent has driven the highways of Alaska and western Canada in all conditions.
