Dr. Tramayne M. Butler-DeLong, PhD, cultural anthropologist and mom of four, including a 1 year old, 3 year old, 11 year old and 14 year old, founded AnthroSpa Logic, LLC in 2007 shortly after receiving her Ph.D. in cultural anthropology in 2006 from the University of Michigan. A National Science Foundation and Social Science Research Council Fellow, she has conducted field research on culture in Kenya and the U.S. The Chicago native returned to the city to settle and start a family after completing her degree in Ann Arbor. Dr. Butler became increasingly interested in natural and organic products after her oldest two sons were born. She enjoyed visiting spas and was struck by the lack of high-end, all natural skin care products that offered spa quality results. She often found herself attempting to recreate the spa experience at home by making her own natural treatments. Inspired by her cultural research in Kenya as well as her travels to London, Paris, Nice, Italy and Monaco, Dr. Butler felt that an upscale, all natural skin care line could benefit from the holistic and cross-cultural approach of anthropology.
While teaching as an adjunct professor of anthropology in Chicago, the busy mom started researching and developing her spa skin care line while at home with her young sons. Dr. Butler relied on her background in anthropology to develop 100% natural products that combine the beauty secrets of native cultures around the world. Responding to the growing consumer demand for upscale all natural personal care as well as multitasking skin care products, Dr. Butler used simple, pure formulations that were completely chemical free and preservative free. Because they contain no preservatives, the products are packaged dry, similar to dried foods and contain 100% active ingredients that are activated with water. Dr. Butler designed the multitasking scrubs and masques to have an anti-aging effect on the entire body so the products contain no soap or clay to dry the skin. In the scrubs, she included a unique botanical long used by Native Americans and Europeans during the middle ages as soap. Dr. Butler is currently expanding the personal care line to include more innovative products that will be available in the new retail storefront that she opened in Chicago’s Old Town neighborhood.
