From 2014 to the present John has been in solo practice representing private businesses and public entities contending with construction, procurement, regulatory compliance and privacy issues.
Before returning to the full time practice of law in 2010 John spent six years working with private investment groups placing real estate backed loans and acquiring distressed assets in (primarily) the Arizona market. His work with investors focused upon acquisition and lending due diligence, the preparation of relevant offering documents and negotiation, drafting of relevant purchase, sale and development agreements and the supervision of acquired assets. From 1991 to 2000 John was with the Sundt Companies and its subsidiaries, acting first as the firm’s Senior Counsel and then, from 2000 to 2004, managing its Southern Arizona Building Group. John left Sundt several years after the company completed its transition to 100% employee ownership.
From 2000 to 2004 John was responsible for Sundt Construction, Inc.’s Southern Arizona office, developing proposals for, presenting and procuring a variety of public and private construction projects. Before undertaking a business management role John spent nine years as the Sundt Companies’ Senior Counsel, dividing his in house legal practice between transactional and litigation duties at both the corporate and individual profit center levels. John’s transactional duties centered on review, preparation and negotiation of traditional and alternative delivery method (CM at Risk and Design/Build) contracts in the public and private sectors and corporate law matters ranging from human resources to procurement and regulatory compliance.
Johns commercial practice accomplishments included the introduction an innovative corporate tax strategy which completed the sale of 100% of the Sundt Companies’ stock to its employees while legitimately deferring the payment of federal and state corporate income taxes and sheltering the savings within the Company’s Employee Stock Ownership Plan.
John’s litigation duties focused on resolving multiparty claims including Miller Act and Mechanic’s lien cases. Litigation matters were handled primarily within the Southwestern United States and the Pacific region, including the islands of Diego Garcia, Guam, Hawaii and the Philippines. At the corporate service level, John served on the Leadership, ESOP, and Strategic Planning Committees of The Sundt Companies; and the Board of Directors of M.M.
